Abbotsford athletes led the defensive charge as Team B.C. opened the Football Canada Cup with a shutout victory over Manitoba on Saturday in Lethbridge, Alta.
B.C. took a slim 1-0 lead into halftime, but the offence came to life in the second half, posting 17 points to put the finishing touches on an 18-0 win.
W.J. Mouat linebacker Jake Heathcote was named B.C.’s defensive player of the game, while his Hawks teammate Nathan Henczel had an interception late in the fourth quarter.
B.C. moves on to face Quebec in the semifinals on Tuesday.
LETKEMAN, CANADA 11th AT JUNIOR WORLDS
Abbotsford’s Matt Letkeman and the Canadian under-19 men’s basketball team finished 11th at the FIBA U19 World Championships in Latvia.
Canada went 3-5 at the tournament, capped by an 84-79 victory over Egypt on Saturday. Letkeman, a 6’7″ power forward who graduated from Yale Secondary in 2010, averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.5 minutes per game.
CASCADES HOSTING SPORTS CAMPS
The University of the Fraser Valley athletic department is offering a series of sport-specific summer camps in July and August.
The Cascades camps will be led by members of the varsity coaching staffs and UFV athletes, and the dates are as follows:
• Boys basketball, Aug. 15-19
• Girls soccer, Aug. 8-12
• Boys and girls rowing, July 11-15 and July 18-22
• Girls volleyball, Aug. 8-11
• Boys volleyball, Aug. 22-25
