Sports in brief: Rugby coach Ross named coach of year

Abbotsford rugby coach Jen Ross has been named the female coach of the year by Sport BC.

Abbotsford rugby coach Jen Ross has been named the female coach of the year by Sport BC.

Ross, who also won Rugby Canada’s female coach of the year prize in 2013, is active coaching at the high school (Bateman Secondary), club (Abbotsford RFC), regional (Fraser Valley) and provincial (B.C. U16 girls) levels. Last year, she guided her Abby U18 girls team to a provincial club title, won a regional championship with the Fraser Valley U18 girls, and won nationals with her B.C. U16 girls.

SILVER FOR SCHLAGINTWEIT

Yale Secondary grad Rosie Schlagintweit helped the UBC women’s volleyball team to a silver medal at the CIS national championships in Regina last week.

The Thunderbirds were seeking their seventh straight national title, but they were denied by the Manitoba Bisons in the final.

Schlagintweit was named a second team All-Canadian at the CIS awards banquet earlier in the week, after finishing second on the T-Birds with 264 kills during the regular season.

CASCADES BEAT UBC IN TOURNEY FINAL

The University of the Fraser Valley men’s soccer team won the Kwantlen Cup tournament in Surrey.

The Cascades blanked host Kwantlen 2-0 in their opener, with goals from Kree Byrne and Dylan Jordan, and Arturo Ortiz posting the shutout.

UFV beat the defending national champion UBC Thunderbirds in the final on penalties, after the score was tied 1-1 in regulation. Colton O’Neill scored the Cascades’ goal in the 83rd minute.

WRESTLING AT UFV

On Saturday, the University of the Fraser Valley will play host to the B.C. Open Club Wrestling Championships.

The event, co-hosted by the Mid Valley Athletic Club, runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
