Sports in brief: Schmidt gets the call from Team Canada

Abbotsford's Sophie Schmidt has been named to the roster for training camps with the Canadian senior women's national soccer team.

Abbotsford’s Sophie Schmidt has been named to the roster for training camps with the Canadian senior women’s national soccer team in Boston, Mass. and Malmö, Sweden.

Team Canada is in Boston March 18-24, where they will play an international friendly vs. Brazil. The squad then flies to Sweden, where their training time will include a game against the Swedish national team.

Schmidt, a midfielder, is a key contributor for a Canadian team which has qualified for the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

SKIERS EXCEL

A trio of local racers won gold medals at the Nancy Green Ski Race at Hemlock Valley Resort earlier this month.

The Hemlock Ski Club placed three on the top step of the podium, as Brayden Bourdin, Sidney Kardoes and Madisyn McPhail all won gold medals in their respective age brackets.

LADIES GOLF SIGN-UP

The Ladies Morning Golf League at Fraserglen Golf Course is holding a registration session on Tuesday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.

TIME FOR TENNIS

Local tennis players are invited to participate in singles and doubles tennis leagues, which begin play in April.

The leagues offer an opportunity to play the sport at one’s own skill level. Players or teams will play at least six matches on local courts.
