Swimming provincials come to Saanich
Pacific Coast Swimming is hosting the provincial swimming short course championships for at Saanich Commonwealth Place this weekend.
Nearly 600 under-18 swimmers from B.C. and Yukon will compete. The meet started Thursday and runs to Sunday (March 6). Today’s and Saturday’s heats go from 9 to 1 p.m., with finals from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday’s heats are 9 to 1 p.m., 4 to 7 p.m.
Gryphons, Pacers rest for A provincials
The Glenlyon Norfolk Gryphons beat the Pacific Christian School Pacers for the single-A Island boys title, 78-73, in the final at Ucluelet on Saturday.
The Gryphons and Pacers will compete in the A provincials in Langley March 9-12.
The Pacific Christian School Pacers girls basketball teams qualified for the A provincials in Sparwood, March 9-12.
The Pacers’ girls team went 7-1 in league play, and won the Islands in Chemanius on Saturday. PCS beat St. Margaret’s in the semifinal. St. Margaret’s ended the Island tourney in fourth, Glenlyon Norfolk third.
PCS qualify with the only Island berth at provincials though Duncan Christian played a challenge game against a mainland team for a wildcard spot.
Lambrick boys top SMUS
The Lambrick Park Lions arrived in Kamloops this weekend for the AA boys provincial basketball championships as the number one seed from the Island.
Lambrick topped St. Michaels University School, 68-56, in the final of the AA Islands played at Ladysmith on Feb. 26.
Lambrick, SMUS and Brentwood College (third) qualified to go to Kamloops.
SMUS defeated Cedar (Nanaimo) and Woodlands to get to the Island final while Lambrick beat Ladysmith and Brentwood.
SMUS trumped as hosts of AA girls’ Islands
St. Michaels University School came second as they hosted the girls’ AA Islands Feb. 24-26.
Lambrick defeated SMUS in the final, 64-52, as both teams qualified for provincials at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, March 4-6.
SMUS defeated Kwalikum, 73-44, and Woodlands, 68-42, to make the final.
