Athletes from Abbotsford’s Twisters Gymnastics Club brought home a bushel of medals from the season-opening Omega Invitational in Coquitlam last weekend.
Five Twisters female gymnasts attended, and each of them climbed the podium.
Ashlynn Skulstad, Marquita Morison, and Andry Friesen all competed in the national open division. Skulstad earned a trio of silver medals – on beam, floor and all-around – and added a bronze on the vault. Morison came third on bars, beam, floor and all-around, while Friesen was second on floor and fourth all-around.
In the provincial level 5 tyro category, Emily Moorthy won gold on the vault and silver on bars, beam and all-around, while Vanessa Beckmann placed second on vault.
FRIESEN, LUYKEN HONOURED BY UFV
Basketball players Aieisha Luyken and Joel Friesen have been named the University of the Fraser Valley’s athletes of the week.
Friesen, a third-year shooting guard, helped the Cascades men to a sweep of the UBC Thunderbirds last weekend, leading his team in scoring both nights with 23 points on Friday and 18 Saturday.
Luyken paced the UFV women’s squad to a split with UBC. She also led her team in scoring, posting 17 points Friday and 15 Saturday.
MARTIAL ARTS DEMONSTRATION COMING UP
An open house and demonstration of the Japanese martial art Aikido is being held Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Abbotsford Judo Club.
