A pair of Abbotsford residents turned in record-setting performances at the Great Northern Bench and Deadlift Championships in Olympia, Wash. last Saturday.
Al Dahl, competing in the 259-pound weight class in the age 61-67 division, bench pressed 386 pounds to set a new Canadian record for his age and weight. By virtue of his victory, Dahl qualified for the World Powerlifting Championships in Reno, Nevada in November.
Jon Wolbers, 63, set a trio of records in the 220-pound class. In the deadlift, he elevated 562 pounds to set new standards for both the world 61-67 age class, and the masters 56-and-over law and fire division. The Abbotsford Community Policing volunteer also set a new Canadian law and fire record with a bench press of 363 pounds.
LOCAL RUGGERS MAKE TEAM B.C.
Abbotsford will be well-represented on the B.C. Rugby Union squads for the 2011 National Women’s League finals.
Jerusha Dunsmore and Alicia Noger have been picked for the B.C. senior women’s side. Megan Hamm, Meagan Chambers, Sonja Foulds and Desiree Noger have been named to the U23 squad, while the U20 provincial team features Elyssa Philipson.
The national tournament runs June 30 to July 3 at UBC’s Wolfson Fields.
BEARCATS HOST V-BALL CAMP
The Columbia Bible College Bearcats are hosting a pair of volleyball camps this summer.
The Bearcats girls camp, for athletes going into grades 7-12, runs Aug. 22-26. CBC volleyball coaches Duncan Harrison and Rocky Olfert will serve as lead instructors, and cost is $110.
The boys camp, for athletes going into Grades 8-12, is set for Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Olfert will lead the sessions, and the cost is $100.
