Steve Marshall of Abbotsford has made the cut for Canada’s national ‘B’ men’s volleyball team.
Volleyball Canada announced the 21-athlete roster last Wednesday, and the team will play in the Pan Am Cup, July 7-15 in the Dominican Republic.
Marshall, an outside hitter, helped the Trinity Western Spartans win the CIS national title earlier this year. He’ll be wearing the maple leaf for the first time on the indoor scene. He had previously represented Canada at several beach volleyball events, including the U19 World Championships in Poland and the U21 World Championships in England.
SILVER LINING FOR OUTLAWS
The Abbotsford Outlaws 95B rep girls fastball team earned a pair of silver medals at recent tournaments.
The Outlaws finished second at their home tourney, held in late April at Exhibition Park. Last weekend, they traveled to an event in Everett, Wash., where they matched that runner-up result. The Abby squad’s performance was highlighted by home runs from Tannis Yakabuski and Ashley Federau.
REVEL ROLLS AT B.C. CUP
Matt Revel was the top scorer at the U17 B.C. Cup hockey tournament in Salmon Arm last weekend.
Revel racked up five goals and four assists in six games at the B.C. Cup, a tourney which prepares elite prospects for future participation in Hockey Canada’s Program of Excellence. He was one of nine players from the hockey academy at Yale Secondary to be selected for the event, joining Jake Virtanen, Mitch Skapski, Ryan Simpson, Michal Holub, Zach Dyment, Kyle Baron, Cam Seto and Jared Virtanen.
SKAPSKI SENT TO SILVERTIPS
Abbotsford hockey prospect Mitch Skapski was on the move last week, as he was included in a blockbuster Western Hockey League trade.
Skapski, a fourth-round pick by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2011 WHL bantam draft, was sent to the Everett Silvertips in a five-player deal that saw defenceman Seth Jones head the other way. Jones is considered a top prospect for the 2013 NHL entry draft, but he was unwilling to sign with the Silvertips, who owned his rights.
Skapski, a 16-year-old forward, is coming off a big season with the Fraser Valley Bruins of the B.C. Major Midget League. He scored 26 goals and added 23 assists for 49 points in 40 games.

Bob Fatkin won the Elsie McKenzie Award, which honours the top youth and junior curling volunteer.
