Sports in brief: Yale to host CIS preseason volleyball game

The Trinity Western Spartans play the UBC Thunderbirds in a men’s volleyball exhibition game at Yale Secondary on Oct. 15.

A pair of Yale Secondary alumni will take centre stage on Oct. 15, as the Trinity Western Spartans play the UBC Thunderbirds in a preseason men’s volleyball game at the Abbotsford school.

Former Yale Lions teammates Brad Kufske (TWU) and Ian Perry (UBC, pictured below) will be across the net from each other. Kufske is an outside hitter with the defending national champion Spartans, while Perry is UBC’s libero.

TWU’s roster features three other Abbotsford natives – MEI grads Steve Marshall, John Wiebe and Tyler Koslowsky.

The game begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, and are available through Greg Byron at Yale Secondary or at the door.

EXPERIENCE TRIUMPHS OVER YOUTH ON TENNIS COURT

Mark Gervais and Nick Borzelli scored an upset win in the men’s doubles final at the Mission and District Tennis Tournament earlier this month.

Gervais (age 57) and Nick Borzelli (65) knocked off Brandon Wood (27) and Ken Herar (42), winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-4).

In the ladies singles final, Val Gervais defeated Tannis Sanford (6-4, 6-4), while Wood beat Herar in the men’s singles final. The mixed doubles team of Mark and Val Gervais defeated Craig Sciankowy and Loraine Berky (6-0, 6-0).

JUDO CLUB CELEBRATES SPORTS DAY

The Abbotsford Judo Club will be hosting a judo discovery day in celebration of Sports Day in Canada on Sept. 29.

The open house event will include a demonstration, a chance for visitors to join in an introductory class, and judo-related games. The event runs from from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Abbotsford Judo Club, 31410 Maclure Rd. Admission is free, but those who wish to guarantee a spot should pre-register by calling 604-852-8014.

BASKETBALL WHISTLE-BLOWERS SOUGHT

With basketball season just a couple of months away, the Fraser Valley Basketball Officials Association (FVBOA) is searching for new officials to join them this season.

The FVBOA officiates all basketball games played in the region, and they are running education and training meetings on Monday evenings beginning Oct. 1 and through the end of November.

ALL-STAR WRESTLING TO HOST EVENT

All Star Wrestling kicks off its fall season on Sunday, Sept. 23 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre.

ASW is a locally owned wrestling promotion and presents events in Cloverdale and Abbotsford on a monthly basis, and prides itself on promoting old school-style wrestling for new school fans. Athletes who wrestled in the 80’s on BCTV, like Gorgeous Michelle Starr, Oly Olsen and The Mighty Iton, are mixed with new wrestlers just getting their feet wet. The current All Star Wrestling Trans Canada Champion is former WWE superstar Gangrel The Vampire Warrior.
