Clowning around

In conjunction with a number of partners, the City of Terrace will be offering children a circus training camp this spring.

The camp is to be called Circus Northwest and will take place over a five-day period at the Caledonia Senior Secondary gym April 4-8.

According to Jennifer Alexander, one of the event organizers, youths will be given a chance to learn juggling, clowning, trapeze, acrobatics, tightrope walking and unicycle riding.

Training will come from three instructors from Green Fools Theater group based out of Calgary, Alberta.

At the end of the camp, there will be a final performance by participants for the community.

The camp costs $30 per child and is available to youths nine and older, or seven and older with a parent volunteer.

Alexander hopes the camp will result in children being able to perform at additional events around the community.

“It is a real opportunity for youth to get involved in the community,” she said.

Alexander got the idea for the circus camp  after hosting a similar event in Chetwynd.

Snowarama sledding

The Skeena Valley Snowmobile Club is hosting its annual Snowarama Feb. 20.

Everyone is welcome to attend this day-long event, which last year hosted between 75-100 people and raised around $3,000 for the BC Lions Easter Seals Club.

President Terry Unrau will be ready to meet people in the Sterling Mountain parking lot at 9:30 a.m.

Riders who are not part of the club will be asked to pay a trail fee.

“It’s a great, fun event,” Unrau said.

Anyone interested in more information can call Unrau at 250-641-0789 for details.

Cross-country comeback

The Snow Valley Nordic club is hosting a marathon Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. out at the Onion Lake cross-country ski trails.

Everyone is welcome to come and ski 1km, 5km, 10km, 15km, or 30km.

Everyone who completes their route wins a chocolate bar, and registration information is on the club’s website www.snowvalleynordics.com.

President for the club, Liz Thorne, said membership for the club is up this year. It brings the total number of members to around 286, which Thorne said has been a long slow climb from previous years where members have dipped as low as 100.

She said the club was at its height for members around 18 years ago when it had 400.

“We told everyone in the club to get out there and bring their friends,” Thorne said. “It feels like people are having a lot of fun.”
