Polar Bear Plunge

About 25 membes of the Shuswap Swimming Team took part in their fifth Polar Bear Swim in a row on New Year’s Day at Canoe Beach.  It was a beautiful, ice free and balmy -3° C. The team does this event to raise awareness and funds for diabetes research in honour of those who are impacted by diabetes on the team. For each of the youth-aged Shuswap Swimming Team members who takes the Polar Bear plunge, the team donates money to the Canadian Diabetes Association, earmarking the funds for Type 1 diabetes research. This year the team raised over $400, with more donations still trickling in.

Shiver me timbers

The Larch Hills Elementary School Pirate Loppet will take place Friday, Jan. 27, registration at 10 a.m., start time 11 a.m. There’s a Black Powder cannon start and plenty of rowdy “pirates” to welcome and to cheer young skiers (grades three to seven) along an easy five-kilometre ski route. A free hot lunch is served to all participants. Draw prizes are handed out along with prizes for best kid’s pirate costume and school participation awards. All Shuswap-area elementary schools and PACs will be given registration information. Profits from the Pirate Loppet are used to purchase ski equipment for local school kids.
