Courtenay’s Joe Surgenor will be skating at the 2014 Major Midget League All-Star Game.
BC Hockey announced Jan. 6 the rosters for the tilt, which will be held Friday, Jan. 17 in Langley.
The 16-year-old Surgenor is tied for second in scoring with the North Island Silvertips, compiling 19 points (7g, 12a) through 26 games.
Also with the Silvertips is Denman Island goalie John Hawthorne, who has been splitting netminding duties with Liam Young of Nanaimo. Hawthorne is 5-8-0 with a 3.68 GAA through 14 games played.
Sharpe 19th in Calgary
Cassie Sharpe of Comox placed 19th at an FIS World Cup halfpipe event at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Jan. 3.
Sharpe had the fourth best finish for Canadian women at the freestyle ski competition.
Gunter leads ‘Pack
The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s volleyball team enters the second half of Canada West league play ranked seventh in the CIS Top 10 rankings.
The ‘Pack lead the Canada West in digs (10.91 per game) and service aces (1.50 per game) and are second in kills (13.09 per game) and assists (12.43 per game).
They have a number of players among the leaders in Canada West statistics.
Brad Gunter (3rd year, outside hitter, Courtenay, BC) leads the league in points (5.80 per game), is second in kills (5.20 per game) and stands fifth in service aces (0.33 per game).
“Brad is one of the top scorers in the league,” says TRU head coach Pat Hennelly. “He is having a great year with substantially better numbers than he had in 2012-13.”
Towhees picked
Trevor Caton of G.P. Vanier is on the BC Elite Youth Sevens U18 team headed to Las Vegas on Jan. 22 for the USA Sevens High School Invitational. The Invitational ‘Open’ will run Thursday and Friday, while the Elite division will run Friday and Saturday.
This will be the first major tournament of the 2014 season for the program, geared towards identifying and developing players who will be best qualified to represent Canada with distinction at future Olympic Games and World Cup tournaments.
Madi Gold of Vanier has been selected for the 12-team BC U18 women’s team that is going to the Las Vegas High School Invitational Sevens in late January.
