Sprint cars thrill Western Speedway fans during Strawberry Cup

Annual race event a legendary competition on Island

Last weekend saw the WILROC winged sprint cars and lite sprints tear up the Western Speedway in Langford on both Friday and Saturday nights for Strawberry Cup weekend.

Friday night’s winged sprints saw saw Scott Aumen take the fast qualifying time as he circled the track in a mere 13.918 seconds. He couldn’t manage to take home a win, however, as he finished fourth in both his heat and in the trophy dash. Despite having the best lap time – a 14.593 in lap 25 – he finished two laps back of the field in the main event.

That main event was won in a thriller by Matt Mansell, who finished just ahead of Jeff Montgomery in second spot and Robbie Price in third. Paul Verhagen took fourth by a nose in front of Daren Yates.

Friday’s trophy dash was taken by Darren Yates, who crossed the line more than two full seconds ahead of Robbie Price in second.

The sprint car lites played out similarly on Friday, as Ryan Orchard took the fast time with a lap of 15.952, but also went on to finish fourth both in the trophy dash and main event.

That main event was taken by Guy Barrett, who also had the bast lap time during the race (15.719) in lap 13, recording an average speed during that lap of 91.609 mph.

He was followed over the line by Jeff Montgomery in second and Marc Parkinson in third.

Montgomery took home the trophy dash Friday night less than a half second in front of Dave Emmerson in second.

On Saturday, Yates followed his Friday night win in the winged sprints trophy dash with another. Second place went to Mansell, just over a second back.

Yates also took home the main event that night,  as well, reaching a top speed of 102.776 mph on lap 23 on his way to crossing nearly three seconds ahead of Aumen in second place.
