The Bayside Racquets Club is about to open up another season of Squash at the Quality Inn Bayside Resort on September 22.
Once they kick off another year of league play, the Bayside Racquets Club will host an open house on Thursday, Sept. 24 from
6 to 9 p.m. for anyone interested in coming to check out the game of squash.
“We just want to get the word out there,” club member Stuart Kirk said. “We had our AGM not that long ago and we’ve decided that it’d be a great idea to try and let the pubic know where we are and all the fun we’re having here.”
There are two indoor squash courts inside the Quality Inn Bayside Resort on Dogwood Street in Parksville.
With the Bayside Racquets Club having been around for the better part of 20 years, the game of squash has been a staple at the Bayside and the club is always excited to welcome new members.
“There might not be a lot of people who know we’re here,” Kirk said. “Both young and old, it doesn’t really matter what your age. If you’ve got a racket and a pair of gym shoes, you could come on out and give it a go.”
“Not only do we have a league that we play in but there’s two courts here that can be used for anyone who wants to play.”
Membership in the league goes for $60, most of which goes towards insurance through the B.C. Squash Association, where in the event of an injury, a participant can make a claim through B.C. Squash thanks to the league fee.
“It’s a nice thing to have,” Kirk said. “We have about 35 players in our league right now and we go from September through to March. It’s great because you can get some exercise and enjoy yourself without having to battle the elements outdoors.”
Along with membership, there’s a discounted price to the Quality Inn fitness facilities, which include a gym, hot tub and swimming pool.
“It’s really a great option,” Kirk said. “It gives you the chance to use the great facility they’ve got there and have the squash courts there to use if you feel like it as well.”
“We’ve been fortunate to have the facility to use for our league for years and it’s nice to see the numbers coming back year after year.”
If you’re interested in checking it out, or being a part of the league, come on down to the Bayside Resort on Thursday, Sept. 24.
The club will have snacks and plenty of members on hand, playing games and happily answering any questions inquiring minds might have.
“We’ve got lots of members willing to lend a hand,” Kirk said. “It’s always nice for us to welcome new players into our club and any way that we can help, teaching them how to play or just answering any questions that they might have, is nothing but positive for the club.”
