The Ladysmith Steelers Pee Wee football team scored their first shutout against the Barsby Bulldogs last weekend in Nanaimo.
Steelers head coach Demetreous Bourodemos credited strong players and an outstanding defense with the team’s victory of 21-0 against the Bulldogs at John Barsby community school field.
“I was very impressed with the finish of the game,” he said. “They played the toughest team in the league and they did quite well.”
Joseph Coyne helped that victory along with a touchdown while Nevaen Alle-Kopas made two interceptions.
Defensemen Dru Wright and Felice Toscano also pitched in a good effort with some solid plays.
“These are young kids, eight years old, playing in a big man’s game and they were just relentless,” Bourodemos said.
Following the Pee Wee game, the Steelers Jr. Bantam team put in a valiant effort against Barsby, losing with a final score of 28-6.
The most interesting play of the game, however, went to Ladysmith when Nick Deroch executed a perfect fumble recovery and made an unescorted streak to the endzone for a touchdown.
“I’ve been coaching for two decades and I’ve never coached that before,” Bourodemos said. “It was so much fun, I got so excited because I don’t see that too often in any league.”
The Ladysmith Steelers will play on home turf, Forrest Field, for their next game of the season against Campbell River.
The Pee Wees will kick off at 11 a.m. with the Jr. Bantams to follow at 1 p.m., at Forrest Field.
