The under-14 Delta Coastal Sting Metro girls soccer team took gold in their group at the USA Cup tournament in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Sting team went 6-1 (won-lost) through the round robin and playoff portion of the tournament, then defeated the Northern Lights Soccer Club from Minnesota 3-0 in the championship match.
The USA Cup is the largest youth soccer tournament in the western hemisphere and this year included more than 1,000 teams from 17 countries, 17 states and six Canadian provinces. It is hosted at the National Sports Centre, the world’s largest soccer facility, with 52 fields in one location.
“The players had to endure 100-degree (Fahrenheit) temperatures through most of the week long event,” said coach Kevin Cornes. “But they showed tremendous resolve, dedication and sportsmanship throughout.”
The Delta Coastal Sting players are: Evalyn Drefko-Roberge, Samantha Kaltenegger, Sydney Cervi, Kylie Robertson, Taylor Russell, McKenna Milos-Johnson, Ravneet Sandhar, Mary Allworth, Allison Scanks, Meghan Lindsay, Skye Moore, Samantha Lundquist, Riley Moore, Stephanie Pak, Maarja von Schulmann and Jamie Cornes.
