The Upper Island Storm U16 Girls thrashed the West Coast Selects from Maple Ridge 5-0 Saturday in Coastal Cup soccer action.
Part of the high performance Vancouver Island Premier League, the Storm are made up of players from Nanaimo, Comox and Oceanside, with local standouts Sophie Palmer, Bronwyn Kirk, and Olivia Friesen all contributing.
In action in Nanaimo at Merle Logan Field on Saturday against their counterparts from the ‘Ridge, the high performance side of Islanders turned in a great effort and were rewarded for their efforts.
According to team assistant Stuart Kirk, Palmer opened the scoring about 12 minutes in when she took a pass from Tkia King, broke in alone and buried it on the run. The Storm carried the play in the opening half, took a 1-nil lead into the break then came out flying to start the second half “and netted a flurry of four goals, with two by Jessie McColm and one each off the boots of Katelyn Horsley and Jenaya Pynn.”
GAME ON: The Storm are back in action at Merle Logan Field this Sunday at 2 p.m. for their Coastal Cup semifinal showdown against CCB Elite from Vancouver.
