Storm top Slammers in fastpitch battle

The Chilliwack Storm upset the Chilliwack Slammers in a U-16 fastpitch showdown, earning host status at provincials in July.

The Chilliwack Storm beat the Chilliwack Slammers in a clash of U-16 fastpitch teams last Saturday, earning a trip to provincials.

The teams squared off in a best-of-three series at FG Leary.

The Slammers were heavily favoured coming in, but the Storm blew their doors off in game one, taking a 9-2 decision.

The Storm completed the upset in game two, taking a 5-4 decision in extra innings. Rookie Celeste Bousfield slid across home plate with the winning run.

The Storm had everything working to perfection.

Defensive gems included a double-play catch by Autumn Chapman in right field, and a line drive snare by Kassidy Gleboff at first base.

Catcher Stephanie Peeling kept herself busy gunning down base runners and catching pitches from flame-throwing Alaysia Adrian.

Offensively, Adrian and Shantel Andrews clubbed home runs and Tricia Jensen laid down a perfect bunt. Karen Esau, Jordyn Pritchard, Alyssa Visser, Emily Murray and Tamika Stump also came up with key hits.

Down but not out, the Slammers can still join the Storm at provincials if they can battle their way through district playdowns.

Provincials will be held in Chilliwack July 5-7.
