Storm unbeaten in Montreal

The Surrey Storm are at the top of the standings midway through the Under-18 Women’s Fastpitch Canadian Championship in Montreal.

The Storm have opened the 17-team tournament with four victories, and are one of four teams still unbeaten. The top eight teams after eight round robin games advance to a modified double-knockout playoff next weekend.

Surrey began with wins over three Ontario teams, the first a 4-3 extra-innings decision over the Mississauga North Tigers yesterday (Sunday) morning.

Tori Belton was the winning pitcher, allowing two unearned runs on two hits. Anna Battison scored two runs for the Storm.

Surrey had eight hits in game two, a 10-3 victory over the Enniskillen Express. The Storm scored five runs in the second inning, and added two more in each of the third and sixth frames. Belton won her second game of the day, with the three Express runs coming on five hits and three walks. Belton fanned 10 Enniskillen batters.

Janessa Neufeld was the leading hitter, with three runs batted in on two singles and a double.

The Storm handed the Windsor Wildcats their first loss of the tournament this morning with a 3-1 win.

Dallas Tilley threw a complete-game six-hitter, allowing one unearned run in the first inning.

Belton tied the game with a single to score Alisha Welch in the fourth inning. Welch singled to score Anna Battison for the winning run in the sixth. Kylie Reubens provided insurance, her single in the seventh inning driving in Belton.

The Storm concluded play Monday with a 9-0 shutout win over the St. Alberta Angels of Alberta, a game called after five innings on the mercy rule. Lindsey Ogilvie had a pair of hits, including a three-run double in a six-run fourth inning.

The Storm play twice again tomorrow, taking the field with the Regina Riot and the Saskatoon Kaos. On Wednesday, the Calgary Kaizen and and Guelph Gators are the opposition.
