Striding to first place

Overcast skies and cool temperatures helped five local Shuswap Lady Strider members place well at the recent Fresh Air Experience Women’s race in Kelowna on June 12.

Overcast skies and cool temperatures helped five local Shuswap Lady Strider members place well at the recent Fresh Air Experience Women’s race in Kelowna on June 12.

There were 116 participants in the 10-kilometre and 164 in the five-kilometre races. The Fresh Air Experience began in 1983 and Striders have participated since 1985. It is currently a fundraiser for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.

Mary Hamilton placed first in her age category (60-plus) in the 10-km race with an impressive time of 1:00:22. The overall winner from Kelowna (35-39 age category) came in at 42:38.

Bev Wice placed third in her age category (60-plus) in the five-km race with a time of 31:34.

Other members participating were Patricia Larmand, Jos Penner and Pam Shaw (all in the 60-plus age category). All completed the race with times between 32 and 40 minutes. The overall winner from Kelowna (age 40-44 age category) finished in 21:49.
