Local elementary school students were running, jumping and hitting balls last week at the Mile 108 Elementary School during the Grade 7 volleyball tournament.
“It was awesome. We had such a great turnout, lots of parent support and teacher and coaches. The kids played phenomenal games,” says educational assistant Rae-Lynn Lytton, who organized the tournament.
Despite it being a Grade 7 tournament they also had some Grade 5 and 6 students from Lac la Hache Elementary School.
The students loved it, she says.
“They had so much fun. It’s almost like it’s a holiday for them. So they like that, a whole day with no school work.”
Mile 108 entered three teams, Horse Lake entered three, 100 Mile two and Lac la Hache one for a total of nine teams.
To determine the winner, the schools averaged out their points so the schools with fewer teams didn’t lose on account of having fewer teams.
Mile 108 students ended up in first, with Horse Lake and 100 Mile tied for second and Lac la Hache in third.
In January, students will be moving into basketball, says Lytton.
“They just all worked so hard and I’m so proud of them. I did three teams which is actually the most teams Mile 108 has ever put in. It was a ton of work but they did great and the sportsmanship was outstanding this year. They all did very very well.”
The Mile 108 PAC did concessions with pizza, hot dogs, tacos and candy.
“You always need candy to keep going for a day that long.”
