With the exception of an unbeaten record, there isn’t much more Shane Beatty could ask from his Okanagan Sun at the halfway mark of the B.C. Football Conference season.
The Sun is on a roll heading into the Labour Day weekend break, having won its last three games by a combined score of 156-36.
Beatty’s squad is 4-1 and in sole possession of top spot, two points ahead of the Langley Rams and Kamloops, who are both 3-1.
“We’re really happy,” Beatty said of his club’s play over the last three weeks. “It’s just a matter now of continuing to focus on the fundamentals and play like we know we can play. We like the position we’re in.”
The Sun’s latest domination came Saturday in Kamloops in a 54-16 plastering of the hometown Broncos.
Okanagan’s running game was again in fine form as Kasey Russell scored a pair of rushing touchdowns, while Cam Bedore, Dillon Fortune and Alex Bradley each added majors along the ground.
Bedore tossed a touchdown pass to Lerone Robinson, while Josiah Joseph connected with Kamloops product Lliam Wishart for a 46-yard score late in the fourth quarter for his first BCFC major.
“I just ran a fade and bent it inside and it was a great throw,” Wishart told Kamloops This Week. “It felt really good.
The Sun racked up 480 yards in total offense, including 333 along the ground.
“Our offence came out strong and we were good in all phases of the game,” Beatty said. “We took too many penalties, but other than that we were happy.”
On defense, the Sun picked off three Broncos passes—one each from Brennan Van Nistelrooy, JT Fernandez and Landon King—while Robbie Yochim and Ron Mwamba combined for 15 tackles.
Following a week off, the Sun will return to action Saturday, Sept. 6 when they host the Langley Rams.
