Sundance Taekwon-Do members tested their skill in a field of more than 280 athletes at the International Taekwon-do Federation Western Canadian Championships at the University of Regina.
The Vernon-based martial arts school sent eight athletes who earned 13 medals.
“All of the members worked extremely hard in their preparations to bring in three gold, six silver and four bronze,” said head instructor David White.
In black belt competition, Brad Cotey recorded gold in patterns and silver in heavyweight sparring, while Abbie Bennett grabbed silver in the junior girls second degree patterns and bronze in light heavyweight sparring.
Junior male Brett Bell earn silver in first degree patterns and silver in the junior boys light heavyweight sparring.
Kelly Kinniburgh took bronze in women’s third degree patterns and gold in women’s black belt light heavyweight sparring.
Several Sundance members also met success in colour belt competition, with Jacob Bennett striking gold in pre-junior boys red belt lightweight sparring. His brother, Aidan, collected bronze in the same division, and Charlie Bennett put in a great effort in taking home silver in bantam yellow belt patterns and bronze in sparring.
White earned silver in the men’s fourth degree patterns.
“This was a great showing by some of our most dedicated members,” said White. “We couldn’t be prouder as a school and as a community.”
Sundance plans to send six members to nationals, May 17-18, in Quebec City. All of the black belt competitors will be vying for a spot on the national team that will compete at worlds this fall in Benidorm, Spain.
The club, which operates out of St. James Elementary, is accepting new members.
