A quartet of Surrey rugby players now have national titles to their credit, after Team B.C. captured its second consecutive title at Under-19 Canadian Rugby Championships last week.
Dylan Kiselback – a former Semiahmoo Secondary rugby captain – Surrey Beavers’ Nathaniel Hight and Earl Marriott Secondary alums Liam Bealieau and Quinton Willms were all members of the title-winning side, which edged the Prairie Wolfpack 15-13 to win the game, which was held in Calgary.
B.C. won the game in the final few minutes, when Vancouver’s James Pitbaldo – a Canadian U20 international player – scored the go-ahead try as the clock ticked down.
“We were down but had most of the possession for the final 20 minutes,” said BC head coach Kris de Scossa. “We were very good at using our bench throughout the tournament and again it really helped when we brought on fresh legs. We stuck to the process and were creating scoring opportunities and finally it came with under a minute to play.”
Willms had a conversion and a penalty kick in the victory.
