Aly Benes netted her second goal of the game early in extra time, moving Surrey United into the semifinal round of the women’s A Provincial Cup soccer tournament.
United stopped Richmond FC 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Cloverdale Athletic Park in a quarterfinal game of the single-knockout provincial championship competition. Both teams are members of the Metro Women’s Soccer League. Surrey topped the Premier Division with a 13-0-1 (win-draw-loss) record, seven points better than third-place Richmond, which was 10-2-2.
Benes had given Surrey a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, but the visitors tied the game late in the second half.
United will host Coquitlam Metro Ford next Sunday at noon in Cloverdale. Coquitlam was fourth in the MWSL Premier Division this past season with a 7-5-3 record. Surrey defeated Metro Ford in the only head-to-head meetings this past season, winning 3-0 in Cloverdale on Nov. 20.
In men’s A Provincial Cup, the lone remaining Surrey team was eliminated in the quarterfinal round. Rovers Tigers United of the Vancouver Metro Soccer League’s Premier Division was eliminated 1-0 Friday evening by Langley United of the Fraser Valley Soccer League.
