Surrey’s Beth McLucas has been named “Ms. Lacrosse” in B.C. as this year’s winner of the Tom Gordon Plaque.
The award was given to McLucas, a Newton resident, during the B.C. Lacrosse Association’s annual general meeting, held in Whistler from Oct. 14 to 16.
She’s among the province’s most involved volunteers in both box and field lacrosse, at the executive level.
“It was a total shock to me,” McLucas told the Now. “I was humbled and in awe, because it’s a huge plaque for the whole of B.C., and it’s heavy. It’s a great award to receive, a huge honour to get it.”
McLucas loves the energy and fast pace of box lacrosse, and the grace and skill of the field game.
Currently, she’s the BCLA Field Directorate and also chairs the Lower Mainland Minor Lacrosse Commission.
She juggles lacrosse-related tasks with two day jobs, as a house cleaner and receptionist.
“All the people involved (in lacrosse) are awesome, and I’ve made some really good friends,” McLucas said.
Eighteen merit award winners were honoured at the BCLA event, including Al Sleightholme of Surrey Field Lacrosse, as one of three referees of the year.
Also, Susan dos Santos was given a Presidents’ Award for her volunteer work with Surrey Minor Lacrosse Association.
