It wasn’t a huge group that went to the BC High School Swimming Championships, but they gained invaluable experience and know what to expect the next time they attend.

Konrad Thummerer and Luke Knight both bit the bullet and attended the top competition for high schools in the province in Richmond along with coach Dustin Hersee.

While they did not advance to final swims, they were both satisfied with their performance at the competition.

This is the first year that the North West Region has had a school swim team program and, as a result, the preparations for the meet left some potential swimmers behind. With a program on the books for next season, some swimmers have already put the meet on their schedules.

Many swimmers also train and compete with club teams and as a result there was a conflict in meet dates for some.

Hersee was satisfied with the progress that the program was able to make this season and is looking forward to more swimmers who will want to attend the provincial meet next year. There has also been some interest in other northwest zone schools starting swim teams.

Bulkley Valley Otters coach Tom Best was supportive of the program. “It’s great to have someone the caliber and experience of Dustin come in and get this program going. We have a great aquatics tradition here and he’s going to enhance it a great deal,” he said.
