Forget about worrying where the ball is going to end up. The key to a smooth golf swing is focussing on what the body is doing during the swing motion.
So says Canoe Creek CPGA pro Hall Thomlinson, who heads the Greater Vernon parks and rec Maximum Golf program starting Wednesday night at the rec centre.
“The golf swing is not a thought out process,” said Thomlinson, pointing out that a typical stroke takes about 1.5 seconds to complete. “The golf swing is a muscle reaction, and we train the muscles to make that reaction. If you start thinking too much, that’s when you mess it up.
“On the driving range, the results are where the ball went. They focus on the ball rather than their golf swing and where the club head hits the ball.”
To work out the kinks in a golfer’s swing, Maximum Golf uses more than 30 different repetitive exercises and swing drills. There is also the opportunity have video analysis to see where improvements can be made in your swing.
“It’s for anyone who wants to improve their golf swing,” said Thomlinson. “Everyone is a little bit different, so you’re teaching everyone on an individual basis.”
Classes are 90 minutes and there are four times to choose from: Wednesdays at 5:45 and 7:15 (both session start Feb. 9), and Mondays at 5:45 and 7:30 (starting Feb. 21). Participants are asked to bring a club, if they own one, and a large hand towel.
