When Steven Sykorsky was a youngster, his grandpa told him that if he wanted to get stronger, he should start eating sardines.
Sykorsky has been eating the tiny fish ever since, and whether or not the sardines deserve the credit, he’s certainly gotten strong.
The 30-year-old Special Olympics powerlifter from Abbotsford recently won his fourth straight gold medal at a provincial-level competition, winning the overall title in the 105 kg weight class at the B.C. Powerlifting Association provincials in Vancouver.
“It was a fierce competition,” he said. “I made some lifts I didn’t think I could make.”
Sykorsky hoisted 220.5 pounds in the bench press, and 286.5 pounds in the deadlift en route to victory.
