For the second straight year, the Trinity Western Spartans were stymied in the gold medal game.
The Spartans fell 3-0 to the host UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday night at Thunderbird Stadium in the CIS women’s soccer championship final.
The T-Birds scored twice in the first half and added an insurance marker in the second half to win the Gladys Bean Memorial Trophy for a CIS record sixth time.
A Trinity Western victory would have been the Spartans’ record-setting sixth title as well.
The Spartans, the fifth seed at nationals, were making their CIS-record fourth straight appearance in the championship game. They won the title in both 2012 and 2013 before losing to the Laval Rouge et Or last November.
TWU did earn a measure of revenge, ending Laval’s 34-match win streak with a 2-1 victory in penalty kicks in Saturday’s semifinal.
The Spartans had beat the Cape Breton Capers 2-0 in the quarter-final round.
TWU and UBC played four times this season with the T-Birds winning three times and the teams playing to a scoreless draw in the other. The Spartans failed to score a single goal in all four contests.
