The Trinity Western Spartans extended their unbeaten streak to six matches (5-0-1) with a pair of victories in Prince George.
The Spartans men’s soccer team was facing the first-year Northern British Columbia Timberwolves in Canada West action, posting 2-1 and 4-1 victories.
“The second game we scored a few more goals but the message is the same — we need to continue to do the little things well to be a top side,” said Trinity Western coach Pat Rohla, whose Spartans side is ranked eighth in the country.
“Overall, we came and got what we out to do and that is getting the six points. Every point we get will make a difference at the end of the season.”
Despite the three-goal margin of victory in Sunday’s game, the number of scoring chances was fairly even with the Spartans holding a 17-15 edge in shots and 10-8 in shots on goal.
Mitchell Rohla opened the scoring in the 20th minute and a short while later, Cam Parks made it 2-0 when he deflected a free kick into the goal.
The second half saw Sam Delfs and Jarvis Ambaka make it 4-0 before Sourosh Armani ruining Andrew Hicks’ shutout bid with a goal in the 89th minute.
Hicks finished with seven saves in that game as well as one the game before as he saw Canada West action for the first time.
Mitchell Rohla opened the scoring in the 15th minute but Armani tied the game at one in the 54th minute. But in the 81st minute, Gant headed home a cross from Brayden Volkenant to give the Spartans the 2-1 victory.
The Spartans are on the road as they play in Winnipeg against the Wesmen on Saturday and in Calgary to play the Mount Royal Cougars the next day.
