Taneda dojo students medal at karate provincials

Taneda Karate Dojo members rose to the challenge to medal in the B.C. Karate Provincials

Taneda Karate Dojo members rose to the challenge to medal in the B.C. Karate Provincial last weekend at the Richmond Oval.

Sensei Chris Taneda said this year’s provincial championship was very strong.

Will Wright received a silver medal in the men’s 67 kilogram kumite (sparring), while Jodi Bartier recieved two bronze medals in kata (forms) and kumite in the 35 years and older age group. Also earning bronze was Ciara Browne, nine, in kata and Marcus Bartier for kumite in the 12/13 year old intermediate division. Caitlyn Riddle, a green belt, competed in the elite division, which is one higher than what she normally competes in, and earned a bronze medal in kumite. Kevin Taylor of Summerland won gold in kata and silver in kumite. Simonka Slizek, competing in the 16-17 division, earned bronze in kumite and silver in kata. Her younger brother Jacob, 13, earned bronze in kumite.

“There were some really good performances. We were really proud of the way the kids did,” said Taneda.

“I always say that any competition is good for the athletes. They get put in a position where there is stress involved. It’s a good challenge to overcome, to see how they will do in a pressure situation. Lots of times you will see a growth that won’t happen unless they are put in that bit of mental stress.”

The B.C. Karate championship featured more than 600 athletes over two days.
