Teachers at Brookswood Secondary remember him as a leader in school, someone who always fought for the underdog, and now a year and a half after his passing, they want to make sure Dylan Reichelt’s attitude continues to impact their school community.
On Saturday, April 27 the first annual Dylan Reichelt Memorial Golf and Social will be held at Newlands Golf and Country Club to raise money for a scholarship fund for Brookswood Secondary students.
Reichelt, who graduated from Brookswood in 2011, was killed in a car accident in November 2011.
He is the son of Bill Reichelt, BC Lions trainer, and is survived by his mother Cathy, twin brother Jesse and sisters Kiera and Keri.
Since his death his family have established a $1,000 scholarship for the next four years to give to a graduating student who exemplifies leadership, school spirit and compassion for the underdog.
But in order to sustain the scholarship, Reichelt’s former gym teacher, Jyoti Pawar, and high school counselor, Mary Krische, have decided to create an annual fundraising event.
“Due to the fact that Dylan loved to golf and that he competed in tournaments throughout his young life, (we) generated the idea of gathering together friends and relatives for a fun golf event, to be followed by an evening of food and socializing in his memory,” Krische said.
“Dylan Reichelt was an exceptional young man,” she added.
“He was an intelligent, capable student who enjoyed and excelled in sports. He was a role model for his peers and for younger students in the school and he was a champion for the underdog. His wry sense of humour and his positive attitude were refreshing.
“He made life great.”
Tee-off is on the executive course at 4 p.m., with a burger and bevy social at 6 p.m.
More than 150 tickets have already been sold and members of the BC Lions will also be participating.
There will be a silent auction and door prizes as well.
