The 59th annual Ladies Wheel ‘n Spiel was held at the Quesnel Curling Centre last weekend (Jan 18-20).
Twenty three local teams competed for a range of prizes, as well as some bragging rights to boot.
The “A” final saw Lindsay Bentley’s team play against Mary Ellison’s side.
While the match started out as a close battle, Team Bentley took control in the fifth end, where they scored three then stole four.
The final score was 11-6 for Team Bentley, which included Stacey Peters (3rd), Rhonda Christenson (2nd) and lead Gloria Ardell.
For the “B” final, Terri Matula’s squad faced off against Carly Backer’s team.
It was another close game until the last two ends, when the Backer team pulled away to win by a final score of 9-5.
Team Backer is made up of Lori Freeman (3rd), Ang Curle (2nd) and lead Debbie Dinsdale.
The “C” Final saw Terri Shpak play Wendy Needham.
Needham came out strong and only gave up points in two of the ends, coming away with a 9 to 4 victory.
Playing 3rd for Team Needham was Shari Needham, 2nd was Penny Yamamoto and the lead was Karen Robles.
Shar Berg, who chairs the Ladies Bonspiel committee, says the tournament went over very well.
“We had three more teams than last year, and it seemed well received, and everyone was happy,” she says.
As much as the players enjoy getting out on the ice and throwing rocks, the social aspect of the spiel is just as important.
“It’s a big thing for everyone involved,” she adds. “On Friday night, there is a social and on Saturday night, we have a banquet.”
Some terrific prizes were also up for grabs.
“There was an Instapot, some nice jewelry and some deck furniture,” Berg says.
“Everyone goes up and has a look, so they pick a few different things in their mind and hopefully they’re up at the prize table when they get there.”
Berg says plans are already underway to make the 60th celebration a big one.
