The University of the Fraser Valley athletic department is launching a fundraising breakfast, and John Herdman, coach of Canada’s women’s soccer team, will be the guest speaker for the inaugural event Nov. 14.
Herdman guided Team Canada – featuring Abbotsford midfielder Sophie Schimdt – to its first Olympic medal, a bronze, at the London Games.
The breakfast runs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. at UFV’s Envision Athletic Centre, and the cost to attend is $75 per person or $500 for a table of eight. The funds raised go to support the Cascades varsity teams.
UFV currently has 140 student-athletes competing in both the CIS and CCAA and are looking to expand their programs and the department over the next several years.
“It’s an opportunity to step up and lend support to our student-athletes,” noted Cascades athletic director Rocky Olfert. “I believe John’s values of teamwork, goal-setting and leadership will resonate not only to our athletes and coaches, but to a wide scope of people interested in these values whether in their place of work or personal life. They certainly apply to what we are trying to do within our department so it’s a perfect fit.”
