Team Bulleid ranked fourth in the women’s curling provincials this year, claiming their 2016 standing and climbing from last year’s loss.
Competing against eight teams in the BC Senior Women’s Curling Championship in Enderby, the Terrace team included skip Lisa Bulleid, and players Nancy Ross, Joan Kucharyshen, and Cheryl Wyatt. (Kathie Simpson helped the team in zone finals, but was injured the week prior and couldn’t go to provincials).
Playing every team once in the round robin, the Terrace women won three games and lost four.
The first two draws were 2-8 and 2-10 losses to Cowan and Roemer teams from Cloverdale, New Westminster, Delta.
Next they played Noble, the defending champions, which has players from all over the Lower Mainland.
Bulleid scored two in the first end and was up 5-2 by the sixth. But Noble managed to slide back in and take two in the seventh end and steal two more in the eighth to win 6-5.
“It was a tough one,” said skip Lisa Bulleid.
“They just managed to get some rocks in behind play that we just couldn’t remove. And they came back and stole two in the eighth end and won. It was a close one.”
Bulleid won 7-4 in their fourth draw against Thomson, a team from Richmond-Vancouver which lost all their games.
Their next draw went to a ninth end, tied 4-4 against Jones, from Chilliwack and Hope.
“It was a tight game, there were a lot of take outs every end,” said Bulleid.
In the ninth end, Bulleid says a lot of rocks were in play, and the opposing skip had a tough shot to make.
“She hit and rolled away and we had another rock in the house still,” Bulleid recalled.
That scored one for Bulleid, who took the win 5-4.
In the last two draws, Bulleid lost 4-6 to third-place Jenkins, and won 7-3 over the Kelowna-based Anderson Rink.
Defending champion Noble claimed first place overall, followed by Cowan and Jenkins. (For details, see curlBC.ca)
“We are very happy with the way we curled,” said Bulleid. “We had a slow start as we adjusted to the fast swinging ice (but) some of the games were very close. We had a great experience. The teams were friendly and the event hosts did a great job.”
