Terrace volleyball player kills rookie season at Kings University

Evan Veldman named Rookie of the Year and one of top four outside hitters in Alberta post-secondary

He was captain and star player of the Centennial Christian Seahawks last year and suited up with Team BC for the Canada Summer Games last summer, and now he’s earning volleyball honours in university.

Terrace volleyball player Evan Veldman is in his first year at The King’s University and was recently named the northern Rookie of the Year by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), the governing body for intercollegiate athletics in Alberta.

Veldman was Rookie of the Year out of teams from seven post-secondary institutions in the north, and Birercrest College player Jordan Schnitzer from Langley was named rookie award winner for the south.

“Evan is a very talented young athlete whose humility and work ethic have enabled him to be a leader on the court,” said Grace Scott, director of athletics at King’s University.

“[He] has been a tremendous addition to our athletic program.”

Despite being a rookie, Veldman leads the King’s team in overall kills, executing 293 kills in total and an average of 3.18 kills per set. He also had 26 service aces and 141 digs.

The stats put Veldman in the top-four outside hitters in the ACAC, which includes 14 colleges and universities in Alberta. He was the only first-year athlete on that list.

Leigh Goldie, ACAC volleyball convener, said the decision to honour Veldman as Rookie of the Year was made collectively by the coaches in the league.

“Evan was chosen for his outstanding season as a rookie,” said Goldie. “He had a big impact on his team.”

Evan plays with his older brother Kenton Veldman, who is in his final year at King’s and also had a strong season with 118 kills, 7 service aces and 117 digs.
