Terrace volleyball teams spike strong

Centennial and Caledonia teams claim zone banners, medals. Provincials coming up

It’s been an exciting stretch of volleyball victories for Terrace teams over the last month.

All three w teams at Centennial Christian School claimed zone banners, and Caledonia Secondary School teams also took home medals.

Caledonia senior girls and Centennial senior girls and senior boys all travel to provincials soon.

Girls teams

Looking at the girls teams first, Centennial senior girls claimed victory at ‘A’ zones in Thornhill last weekend, earning a spot in provincials in Fernie Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

They played Houston Christian and Bulkley Valley Christian School in the round robin, winning both games and then defeated Ebeneezer Christian School 2-0 in the semi-final.

Going up against GM Dawson from Haida Gwaii in the finals, the girls took the first two sets 25-15 and 25-12, lost the third 17-25, and won the fourth set 26-24 to claim the zone banner.

As for the Caledonia senior girls, the team is the only ‘AAA’ team in the zone, so didn’t play in a zone tournament but will compete in provincials in Vancouver the same weekend, Nov. 30 to Dec. 2.

The Caledonia junior girls took first place in their zone, playing against eight teams.

They won all their pool play games, then defeated Charles Hayes from Prince Rupert 2-0 in the semi-final before facing Hazelton in the final.

Caledonia conquered 25-13 and 25-15 to take gold, with Hazelton taking second and Smithers Secondary third.

Boys teams

Looking at the boys teams, Centennial senior boys went undefeated in their zones, and will head to provincials in Kelowna this week.

The team is ranked No. 1 amoung the ‘A’ schools in B.C.

The senior boys ‘A’ zone tournament had six teams playing in Smithers Nov. 11, and Centennial won their round robin games, beat Houston Christian School in the semi-finals and then overcame Bulkley Valley Christian School (BVCS) in the finals.

The junior boys took a similar victory the week prior.

Sharing a number of key players with the senior team, the Centennial junior boys went undefeated all season (three play days) and won zones in Smithers Nov. 3-4.

But the surprise of that weekend was the strong showing by the junior boys from Caledonia Secondary School, who struggled all season.

After a rough start to the tournament, with two losses Friday night, the Caledonia boys turned things around on Saturday to claim second place.

They beat Ebeneezer Christian 2-1 (sets) and Smithers Secondary 2-0, advancing to face BVCS in the semi-final.

Both teams claimed one set to tie them up for the third, where Caledonia narrowly claimed the win 26-24. That advanced them to finals, where they lost to Centennial in two sets and earned second place.

The Caledonia senior boys played zones Nov. 11, but lost to Smithers Secondary.

Stay tuned for provincial results from the local teams.
