The Fulton Maroons stopped the host VSS Panthers 51-35 Saturday in the finals of a Grade 8 boys basketball tournament.
Defensive play and rebounding were the main factors for Fulton in the championship game. Isaac Olson, who pocketed 14 rebounds, and Cole Hunter earned Player of the Game t-shirts, while Caden Doyle, who flushed 16 points in the final, was named Maroons’ tourney MVP.
Nathan Banga added 14 points as Fulton stopped the Panthers.
Fulton, coached by Dale Olson, defeated Kalamalka Lakers 34-22 and grounded Westsyde Whundas of Kamloops 55-31 in earlier play.
The Maroons have a tournament in Penticton and then head into the North Zone playoffs.
Meanwhile, the VSS senior Panthers warm up for their home tournament by hosting the Kalamalka Lakers tonight at 8:15.
The Panthers open their tourney Friday (6:30 p.m.) versus the Okanagan Mission Huskies of Kelowna.
The Pen-High Lakers face the Summerland Rockets at 5 p.m. Friday, while Pen-High and the Huskies jumpstart Saturday play at 10 a.m. VSS takes on Summerland at 11:30 a.m. and then tangles with Pen-High at 1 p.m. Okanagan Mission meets Summerland at 2:30.
The Charles Bloom Timberwolves open their senior A boys invitational by facing the Barriere Cougars Friday at 1:45 p.m.
In other Friday action, the Seaton Sonics meet the Chase Trojans at 3:30, the Merritt Panthers battled the Revelstoke Rams at 5:15 and the Heritage Christan Saints of Kelowna tangle with the Ashcroft Golden Rams at 7 p.m. The final goes Saturday at 8:15 p.m.
