The Hazelton Wolverines played their last game of the season on Saturday against the Smithers Steelheads and fell 10-1 after losing several players and starting with a short bench to begin with.

The fate of the team is still uncertain but chances are, there will not be a Hazelton team competing in the CIHL next year. However, that does not mean it is the end of the Wolverine’s organization.

Members of the Executive have been seriously talking about creating a commercial league next year for locals and keeping the Wolverine club alive and well with a different look.

“We may not be in the CIHL next year but the Wolverines aren’t going anywhere,” President Jessica Mickolayczyk said at a meeting last week. “We are going to create a commercial league and keep on working with an executive and working in our community. Wolfy will still be seen and we will still be playing hockey just in a different type of league.”

The executive said they haven’t hammered out all the details yet but the plans are definitely in the works and residents can be rest assured that the Wolverine name and club will be alive and well in the Hazeltons next year.

If there was enough interest of local jobs to support players in the future, the Executive would definitely look at rejoining the CIHL one day but for now, they want to thank the dedication of the players, coaches, community and sponsors for the past few season’s and look forward to the future and what it holds in store.
