The Sooke Trail and Road Runners host an evening with well-known long-distance running coach and athlete Mike Suminski this Thursday (Feb. 28) at Edward Milne community school.

Suminski, commonly referred to as The Trail Guy, will discuss some of his favourite running trails on southern Vancouver Island. As well, he will invite questions from the audience and is willing to talking about all facets of trail running.

The Trail Guy is a force in local running circles. He’s run about 40 marathons (42 kilometres), 20 ultramarathons (anything over 42 km) and three 100 milers. He also coordinates a local trail running group.

Trail running is an activity, Suminski said, is open to anyone with an open mind. He runs with a group of about 30 people every Sunday and while any open minded road runner who visits trailsofthewestcoast.com is welcome to see where they’re headed and join in, the shortest run length is two hours.

“People tend to get intimidated by trail running, or joining a running group with a two-hour minimum run duration, but 99 per cent of the time people fall in love and aren’t that intimidated,” he said.

The Sooke Trail and Road Runners talk begins at 7 p.m.
