Thrilling finals as Valley Ball Hockey Association season comes to close

Five of six championship finals decided by one goal while the other game was a two-goal differential

Another successful season came to a close as the Valley Ball Hockey Association held their championships finals and awards on Saturday at the George Preston Recreation Centre.

The association, which has grown to more than 1,150 players between the ages of 5 and 19, held their divisional finals throughout the day. The winners earned the right to represent the association at the provincial championships, which will be held in Delta from June 28 to July 1.

And all of the finals were tight games with five of the six games decided by one goal and the sixth game by two goals.

Peanut division: The PN6 JUnior Canucks scored a 5-3 win over the PN3 Silver Bullet.

Pup division: The PU2 White Hawks edged the PU6 Blazers 3-2.

Peewee division: The PW6 Lightning scored a 1-0 shutout victory over the PW13 Wild Apes.

Minor division: The MN3 Grunts advanced with a 3-2 win over the MN10 Black Attack.

Major division: The MJ8 Mighty Mites defeated the MJ9 Wheelers 2-1.

Junior division: The JN3 Mimics edged JN5 2-1.

The league also handed out some awards, including a most valuable player from each team in the junior division final.

Those awards were presented by Kelly and Kurtis Kingsborough and Connie and Barry Wilson, whose sons Austin Kingsborough and Brendan Wilson drowned back in April. The two boys were avid ball hockey players in the association and would have been in the junior division this season.

The awards went to Brian Stertz (JN Mimics) and Wade Brenner (JN5).

Some of the other awards presented on Saturday were:

Kevin Sanders (JN6 Rush) winning coach of the year; Campbell Dyck being presented the new official of the year; Pietro Romegioli getting the junior official of the year; and Brandon Sinclair receiving the Jon Filer Award.
