The Quesnel Thunder tier 3 bantam hockey team travelled to Kamloops for a tournament last weekend and came away with a 2-2 record against some stiff competition.
The Thunder had a rough start to the tournament Friday afternoon with a 7-3 loss against the Burnaby Winter Club bantam tier 2 team.
Ian Jarvis, Dale Brayden and Tavis Roch lit the lamp for the Thunder.
The Thunder fared better Friday evening when they faced the Salmon Arm Silvertips, a tier 2 bantam team, as they skated to a 5-2 win in a game that saw the referee hand out 14 penalties.
The Thunder took advantage of their powerplay opportunities with three goals in nine attempts. On the other side of the puck, the Thunder kept the Silvertips off the scoresheet in five powerplay opportunities and the penalty killing unit also contributed a short-handed goal from Ryan Gagnon.
Also hitting the scoresheet for the Thunder were Jarvis and Chad Kimmie, each with a goal, and Gagnon added two more to round out the scoring.
The Thunder then faced a hot goaltender as they lost a close game 4-3 to the host Kamloops team. Rick Mack netted two goals for the Thunder and Gagnon added the third.
Looking to even up their record, the Thunder faced the Langley tier 2 bantam team in their last game of the tournament.
The Thunder went up 2-1 in the first period thanks to goals by Jarvis and Brayden.
Gagnon scored two more in the second period and Mack added another to stretch the Thunder lead to 5-2 after two periods of play.
The Thunder then clamped down on defence to shut Langley down and added another goal from Nathan Parr to round out the scoring for the 6-2 win.
