The road to the Mann Cup goes through New Westminster for the Langley Thunder.
The Thunder, who had swept the Victoria Shamrocks in the Western Lacrosse Association semifinals, will face the first place New Westminster Salmonbellies in the best-of-seven league championship series.The winner will play for the Mann Cup, Canada’s senior A national lacrosse championship.
New Westminster defeated the Maple Ridge Burrards four games to one in the other semifinal.
The final series begins Wednesday (Aug. 17) at New Westminster’s Queen’s Park Arena. Game two is Friday (Aug. 19) at the Langley Events Centre. Game three is back in New West on Aug. 21 and game four is in Langley Aug. 23.
All of the games begin at 7:45 p.m.
During the regular season, the Salmonbellies won the season series 2-1, with one of their victories coming in overtime. New West led the WLA with 24 points, while Langley was third with 18.
The Salmonbellies have won the past three WLA league titles and have played in the past five championships series.
This is the furthest the Thunder has made it since the team arrived in Langley in 2004. It is also just their second playoff appearance in that time as well, having been swept by New West in the 2009 WLA semifinals.
