Thunderbird players honing hoops skills in high school gyms

Thunderball basketball on Sunday, April 17 produced some exciting action at the Lake Trail and G.P. Vanier school gyms.

Grade 4/5 League

Yellow Jackets vs. Stingers

This game was an intense affair on defence by both sides. There were plenty of steals, with coaches stopping the count early in the game. All players were communicating with each other, led by Mickey Kong of the Yellow Jackets, who the coaches were forced to get off the floor because of his hard work and tireless play. He gave it everything he had. Bryn Matfin of the Stingers showed great sportsmanship and passed the ball well, showing teammates how to move without the ball.

Green Hornets vs. Red Ants

Thomas Demeo displayed an outstanding attitude today, hitting lots of shots and making some awesome passes. Cedar Lloyd was also a terror on defence and worked well with Thomas. For the Red Ants, Zach Toovey was the man, with great effort for his team.

Grade 6/7 League

Boys League

Condors vs. Dragons

The Condors were led by the trio of Nathan, Tyler and Nick, who provided superb teamwork. Nathan showed great passing skills, and put the other team in shock with his great left-hand moves. For the Dragons, who won this close match 32-30, Zak was a defensive genius, and overall this was a good game, with good team defence and plenty of determination shown.

Vipers vs. Bulls

The Bulls were victorious, fighting through the fact that they had only four players, with no subs. There was plenty of steals and lots of fastbreak baskets. Noah Kaefer had numerous layups, while Josh Brooks hit many mid-range shots. Sean Bowen had some deep shots while dishing out plenty of assists.  For the Vipers Carson and Griffen were all over the floor. Rebounding was a key with Carson and Ethan bringing down many rebounds.

Stingrays vs. Mustangs

Davis Malton of the Stingrays was the man today, putting in one of the greatest Thunderball performances of all time, leading his short team to a 43-38 win over a much bigger Mustang side.  Danny Yeo also proved to be a master of the team defence. The Mustangs had only four players, but still played well. Players of the game for them were Cody and Jared for their outstanding hustle, great defence, and positive attitudes. Overall, this was an exciting, close game and much improvement was shown by all.

Girls League

Leopards vs. Bobcats

What an awesome effort, and great defence shown by Emma. The Leopards’ coaches were impressed with the overall improvement by both teams over the past three weeks. Emma was unstoppable under the basket, and wasn’t letting the other team score at all.  For the Bobcats, Olivia Bates kept her great attitude going and never gave up at either end of the floor. Coaches were amazed by the persistent effort given by all the girls.

Cheetahs vs. Jaguars

Coach Kendra Lee really liked how Ally Cyr was consistently tough on defence the whole game. Even though her opponents the Jaguars won this tight game, the competitive level was high.

Tigers vs. Panthers

The Tigers were led by Sloan, who played hard and scored a lot of baskets.  Her teammates scored some great baskets, and showed plenty of hustle on defence. For the Panthers, Maddie cleared the boards, and kept her team in the game.  What a warrior!
