Thunderbirds topple Stars 7-5

The Stevenson Mechanical Thunderbirds took down the scrappy, tough Lumby Stars 7-5 in North Okanagan Super Pee Wee Hockey League action Thursday night at Pat Duke Memorial Arena.

Both teams were 2-0-1 going into Saturday round-robin playoff action. The championship final goes Monday night (7:30) in Lumby

“An all-around team effort from the goalie out paid huge dividends as six T-Bird players slipped the puck past Stars goalie Michael Preston,” said T-Birds’ coach Grampa Joe O’Hearn.

Isaac White bagged a deuce for the T-Birds, while singles came  Michael Pusey, Jadon Foster, Brady Beacom, Aidan Rivard and Samuel White .

Elias Werry pocketed three assists, while Landen Harison and Jacob Wettlaufer each registered two.

Tanner Franje-Gilbert supplied 2+1 for the Stars, who also got two rocket slapper snipes from powerful Drew MacKenzie. Tage Kineshanko sniped a single, while Josh Litven came to the party with three assists.

In Bantam playoff action, the league champion Corbett Office Supply Sharks came from behind to tie the host Winfield Bruins 5-5 Thursday night.

Sean Howard scored twice, including the equalizer, with 6:36 remaining, while other Shark goals came from Kevin Sullivan, Branden Lehoux and Brennan Schwark (3A).

Rhys Larsen made some superb saves in the second half as the roadrunner Bruins pressed hard. Adam Betts and Evan Geiger, each with two, and Jordan Farrell handled the Winfield attack.

The Sharks finished the round-robin at 3-0-1, while Winfield was 1-1-1 going in their final preliminary game Saturday. The final goes Monday night, 7:45, at Civic Arena.
