The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen couldn’t have asked for a better start to the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association.

The T-men posted a 10-4 win over the North Shore Indians in senior B action Sunday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Nanaimo coach Roger Dubyna was pleased with the win, considering the T-men were short bodies due to holiday and work commitments.

“It’s always difficult to play with out a full complement and the guys we had played hard,” he said.

Dubyna was particularly pleased with his squad’s defensive effort, saying they are getting into synch with playing again. The T-men took 45 minutes in penalties.

“I thought we were aggressive in containing them, there were no stupid penalties,” he said. “Being physical is not a problem for us, but we kept our composure. We have to pick the time to defend ourselves. Some things you have to deal with right away, but other things you have to let go.”

Holding an opponent to four goals is something Dubyna would like to see on a regular basis.

“One of my goals this year is to hold teams to six or less goals in a game,” he said. “North Shore has traditionally been a middle of the pack team so we will have to play well to hold other teams off the scoreboard.”

Shane Chalker and Riley Kemp each scored four goals and added an assist for the Timbermen, while Terry Hall and Matt Maughan scored a goal each and Aaron Vanderhorst added four helpers.

The T-men fired 31 shots at the North Shore net.

Nanaimo goaltender Danny Walters had two assists and made 35 stops for the win.

“I thought we moved the ball really well to control it on offence,” said Dubyna. “Not only did we have good quality shots, but our shot selection had quality to it as well.”

Next up for the T-men is the Chilliwack Mustangs 5:30 p.m. Sunday (May 8) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

“Chilliwack doesn’t have a lot of experience but in the two games I’ve seen them, they work hard,” said Dubyna.
