Western Canada Touch Football Championships kicking off this weekend at Bateman Field

The Western Canada Touch Football Championships are kicking off in Abbotsford this weekend.

Nine teams with players from all across the country hit the field at Robert Bateman Secondary on Saturday and Sunday.

The Abbotsford-based teams open on Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with the Blues battling the Aces and the Abbotsford Frost taking on the Wolverines. Action continues at noon, with the Frost challenging the Wolverines, the Rams playing the Pulls, the Blues battling the Huskies and the Raiders taking on the Timberwolves.

Round-robin action continues for the rest of the day on Saturday, with games also set for 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Playoffs begin Sunday at 9 a.m., with the champion set to be crowned at 3:45 p.m.

Games are played with seven players aside, and feature two 30-minute halves. The event concludes the spring season for the Fraser Valley Touch Football League, with action returning for the fall session beginning in late-August.

Players range in age from 16 to 50, with a number of current and former professional, college and high school athletes making up teams.

FVTFL division winners from the spring season included: the Spartans (division one), the Rebels (division two), the Timberwolves (division three) and the Wolverines (division four).
