Touch rugby fun for all ages

Tuesday nights open to all

Rugby may be one of the roughest, toughest sports going, but it’s also easily altered to be family friendly. Phil Hardy has started an informal night of touch rugby in Agassiz, and is hoping more people will come out to give the game a try.

Touch rugby has all the same fun and exercise benefits, he says, but without the pain.

“It’s a huge social sport in places like New Zealand,” he says. “It’s a really good way to stay fit, without getting hurt.”

Games have been held on Tuesday nights, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the AESS field. So far, they’ve advertised by word of mouth, and about a half dozen players of all ages are showing up. Hardy is hoping to see that number grow.

“It is free and open to all,” he says. “This is not a contact game, even less so than flag football.”

Players as young as eight can participate, and the games run until about 8 p.m.

If there is interest in playing on a different night that will accommodate more players, Hardy says they’ll consider changing nights.

For more information, phone 604-316-0982, or drop by the field next Tuesday night.
