The Quesnel Crossfire went through a rollercoaster of a week where they seemed to find their groove, only to lose it again.
The senior lacrosse squad went 1-2, playing the Prince George Assault on Thursday (May 23) before facing off against the Mackenzie Lumberjacks back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday.
While they lost the Thursday night match-up, it seemed the Crossfire everyone loved from last season was back.
They had a full bench and all the swagger that came with it. The team played with intensity and were able to set a blistering pace.
Dusty Cathcart potted a pair and seven other team mates all had singles.
Unfortunately they fell behind thanks to some Yosemite Sam hot-headed behaviour that saw them take too many penalties in the second half of the game and eventually dropped the contest 14-9.
It still felt like a sign of good things to come for a team that had trouble filling their bench and were being blown off the score sheet in the early going this season.
On Saturday night (May 25) they managed to improve even further in a wild-west shoot out with the Lumberjacks.
They earned their first win of the season, edging the Mackenzie team 13-12.
Bryston Waffle scored a hat trick, Landen Scott scored a pair and added three assists and Levi Robertson potted a couple too.
Although they still took a fair amount of penalties, the scorekeepers did not have to use a separate sheet this time around.
The rematch the following morning was a repeat of everything that has been wrong with the Crossfire’s season. Only nine players suited up for the team who were run rough shod by the revenge seeking Lumberjacks.
To make matters worse, one of their best offensive options Hunter McSeveney suffered a broken hand in the contest.
They lost the game 10-4 and are now forced to rethink how they are going to play out the rest of the season.
