The Vanier Towhees were without two key players Tuesday when they went to Powell River to play the Brooks Thunderbirds.

But three others stepped up big time and led the Courtenay cagers to a 99-46 AAA boys basketball North-North Island League victory.

With senior post Brad Gunter (swollen knee) and power forward Trevor McGuire (back) unavailable, the youthful Towhees – seven Grade 11s and one senior – had fun pressing, fast-breaking and out-rebounding Brooks to the tune of 36-18.

Dillon Robson hit a season high 41 points and hauled in eight rebounds while Cam Hughes scored 18 and cleared seven boards.

Jacob Wiebe scored eight and had seven rebounds, three assists and seven steals. Mark McGinnis added 15 points while Dawson Casanave dished a nifty nine assists.

The Towhees wrapped up league play last night when they hosted Ballenas, with result unavailable at press time.
